In this collection celebrating the nurturing spirit of not only the women in Shenandoah's life but of all mothers, sisters, aunts, and friends, Shenandoah sings traditional Iroquois chants with a unique grace and poise. Joanne Shenandoah's voice is silvery smooth, golden rich, and milky warm. According to Shenandoah, woman of the Iroquois served as spiritual advisors, political counselors, and healers -- placed in positions to temper the aggressive nature of the males. Matriarch is dedicated to members of Shenandoah's clan -- sisters, aunts, grandmothers -- and other key women of the Oneida. Her native language is strong on long vowels, smoother even than Hawaiian; the album is as soothing as a lullaby yet brisk with breathtaking vocal harmonies and catchy rhythms. Tom Wasinger's instrumentals on autoharp, resonating stones, bass, guitars, pianolin, and percussion cradle the lyrics as do the environmental sounds from grottoes and caverns. Dean Evenson values the healing properties of music over any of its other aspects, and on this recording, he respectfully reaches out to the Native American culture to reproduce some of its most healing chants and songs. And while he puts his own gloss and spin on them, the traditional spirit remains intact.
The late Native American elder Cha-das-ska-dum Which-Ta-Lum of the Lummi Indian Nation provides the lyrics, vocals, and Native drumming. Flutes and tribal percussion convincingly recreates the Lummi milieu. As on many Native American recordings, the music here is simultaneously mournful and uplifting, reflecting the courage and struggle at their source.

Tribal Legends - Contemporary Native American Music (2002)



Here is a terrific collection of pieces by some of the best contemporary artists whom happen to be Native American. That is really the basis of this "genre" of music. A variety of styles so diverse that they could easily fit into most of the CD sections in any large record store. Unfortunately, that has yet to become a mainstream idea and the reader will have to subsist on word of mouth and reviews they happen to catch. This would be a good place to begin your education. From the quiet storm of Joseph Fire Crow and "Legend of the Warrior/Keep Going" to the wildly danceable "Stomp Dance" performed by Brule, Tribal Legends is a nice introduction to the vast array of music out there by today's Native Americans. With the inclusion of spoken word in several of the songs, this particular collection centers on the spirit of the pow wow, a celebration with people of many nations. Earthbeat! has a continuing series of Native American collections of music, which tend to focus on a certain theme. This is another good starter CD for those folks who have been toying with their interest in this diverse area of music.
